Learn English: History of St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th and it is Irelands most important national holiday. Nowadays, St. Patrick’s day is celebrated around the world, but it has special importance for peopleof Irish descent. The day is named after Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

Born in Britain in the 4th century, he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. Patrick, who was once a slave in Ireland, found solace in religion during his lonely life. After six years of enslavement, he fled to France at 22 and began studying the Bible. Later, he became a priest and returned to Ireland with a mission to convert the people to Christianity. The Irish people though he was brave and Patrick helped establish schools and churches throughout the country. Many believe that St. Patrick performed miracles, including the famous story of driving all the snakes out of Ireland.

St. Patrick passed away on March 17th, 461, and this day has been celebrated as St. Patrick’s Day ever since.
